Bjarte Myrhol led the Norwegian men’s national team for seven years, acting as captain as they secured successive silver medals at the 2017 and 2019 IHF Men’s World Championship. In both competitions, Myrhol was named All-star line player.
Those silver medals were the high points of a long and successful career. Myrhol played 263 games for Norway, scoring 803 goals in almost 20 years, with appearances at five EHF EUROs and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in addition to several World Championships. He missed the EHF EURO 2020, when Norway won bronze, due to stomach problems. Until 20204, Myrhol held the record for the most EHF EURO matches played for Norway - 37 - but his record was surpassed in Germany by Christian O’Sullivan, Harald Reinkind and Sander Sagosen.
Myrhol began his career at Vestli IL in his home city of Oslo, before moving to Sandefjord in 2001. When he left for Veszprém in 2005, he would stay away from Norway for the rest of his club career.
The most notable period abroad for Myrhol were the six years spent at Rhein-Neckar Löwen, during which time he won the EHF Cup and narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title two years running. When he left Löwen in 2015, the club retired his jersey, number 18.
Myrhol officially finished his career with six years in Denmark at Skjern Håndbold, but made a brief comeback in 2022 as a replacement for Hendrik Pekeler in Kiel, winning bronze at the EHF FINAL4 that year.
