BIOGRAPHY
Ola Lindgren joins his ‘Bengan Boys’ peers in the Hall of Fame after a long and hugely successful career, particularly in the Swedish jersey.
The left back was born in Halmstadt, and he played for local side HK Drott for nine years until 1990, with a further three seasons from 1992. During those years, Drott won the Swedish championship four times.
In between the two periods at Drott Lindgren spent a couple of years in Germany at Dutenhofen, and it was in Germany that he would spend the last eight years of his career.
But it was his time playing for Sweden that really put Lindgren’s name on the handball map. He made his first appearance in 1986, aged 22, and played until 2003, when he was 39, recording 376 games and scoring 482 goals. This was the golden period of Swedish handball and LIndgren was at the heart of the nation’s success as they won two world and four European titles, as well as three Olympic and two world silver medals, and two world bronze medals.
Lindgren is one of the small group of Swedes to have been part of four EHF EURO-winning squads.
After stepping off the court in 2003, Lindgren stayed at Nordhorn as a coach and led them to the 2008 EHF Cup title. He has since coached clubs including Rhein-Neckar Löwen and IFK Kristianstad, winning three Swedish titles with the latter; and was head coach for Sweden as they finished fourth in the 2011 World Championship and won silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
