Olafur Stefansson was one of the key players for Iceland during his long career, which lasted for well over 20 years and saw him play more than 300 games and score over 1,500 goals for his country.
Stefansson was born in Reykjavik and played for Icelandic side Valur both as a junior and senior, winning a string of Icelandic championships before he moved to Germany for seven years at Wuppertal and Magdeburg. At Magdeburg, Stefansson won his first of four EHF Champions League titles under the leadership of fellow Icelander Alfred Gislason.
He won a further three Champions League titles with BM Ciudad Real before moving back to Germany for two years at Rhein-Neckar Löwen, coached by Guðmundur Guðmundsson who was also Icelandic national coach at that time.
Stefansson finished his club career with short stints in Copenhagen and Qatari club Lekhiwya. In 2015 he made a brief comeback for KIF Kolding.
For Iceland, Stefansson was a key player for many years. He captained the side to silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and bronze at the EHF EURO 2010, and was named in the All-star Teams at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and the EHF EURO 2002 and 2010. He was also top scorer at the EHF EURO 2002, netting 58 times - a record which stood until Kiril Lazarov exceeded it in 2012.
Stefansson retired from the national team after Iceland finished fifth at the London 2012 Olympic Games. He was assistant coach to Iceland in 2015 and 2016, and since 2022 has been assistant coach at Erlangen in Germany.
