TELAVI
Telavi is the main city and administrative centre of Kakheti, Georgia’s renowned eastern province, hosting around 19,737 residents as of 2024. Nestled on the foothills of the Tsiv-Gombori Range at roughly 500 m elevation, it overlooks the fertile Alazani Valley and offers panoramic views of the Great Caucasus Mountains
With a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age, Telavi emerged as a key political hub in the 8th century. It later served as the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti and the united Kartli-Kakheti during King Erekle II’s era in the 18th century. His reign marked the city’s cultural flourishing, including the founding of a theological seminary and theatre, solidifying Telavi’s national significance.
The city’s medieval character is visible in its four preserved fortifications representing distinct historic epochs, including the Old Walls (Dzveli Galavani) and Batonis Tsikhe royal fortress. Beyond these, Telavi is surrounded by architectural marvels like the Alaverdi Cathedral, Ikalto Academy, and the Shuamta church complex, reflecting its spiritual and scholarly legacy.
Today, this “most medieval” Georgian city is also a gateway to Kakheti’s world-famous wine culture. Serving as the region’s winemaking heart, it welcomes travellers to explore vineyards, qvevri cellars, and local wine traditions set against scenic rivers and valleys.
Connected to Tbilisi by both a longer rural highway and a scenic mountain pass through Gombori, Telavi balances accessibility with natural beauty. Its modern amenities, inviting locals, and blend of history and hospitality make it a popular destination on any Georgian itinerary.
