Matosinhos

It is one of the largest cities in the Porto Metropolitan Area and it sits by the Atlantic Ocean, with some beautiful, small, and secluded beaches, ideal for a quiet day along the shore.

The need for affirmation and internationalization of the cities goes hand in hand with major sporting events and presents proven benefits in terms of economic return on their investments.

Venue: Centro de Desportos e Congressos de Matosinhos

Capacity: 3,875 spectators

This Center has been playing an important sporting, social and cultural role in supporting all the different needs of the city. It has easy access to transport and good roadways which are a major asset for organising the biggest national and international events.

Vasco Pinho – Matosinhos City Councilor

“The municipality of Matosinhos welcomes with the friendliness and hospitality of those who know the meaning of the sacrifice of daily toil for success and M20 EHF Euro won’t be an exception. This is the land of the World's Best Fish and is used to welcome champions. 30% of our school-age youth practice a federated sport - this is a city that endorses the quality of life with physical exercise prescription offices and regular free outdoor physical activity programs and a policy to fight sedentarism among the population. In July, Matosinhos waits for all the delegations in the "House of National Teams", the Sports and Congress Center of Matosinhos.”

Vila Nova de Gaia

This city is located on the Atlantic Coast of Porto flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and the Douro River, which connects Gaia to Porto.

It is also known for its beaches and for the Peer of Gaia, which has some scenic views along the riverbank, with cafés and promenades with panoramic views of the Douro River.

Venue: Municipal Hall of Gaia

Capacity: 1,500 spectators

The city recognizes sport as one of the fundamental pillars for healthy living and makes available to its population a network of infrastructures to encourage the practice of sport and to host major national and international events, including this venue.

Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues – Mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia Municipality

"It is, for me, an enormous pride that Vila Nova de Gaia is one of the cities to host matches of the M20 EHF EURO. A sport with strong expression in our county, which attracts more and more young people and practitioners and conquests - each year - better results. This choice represents, therefore, a sign of confidence not only in the Portuguese organisation but also in cities that have done much for sports and youth, as is the case of Vila Nova de Gaia. I am sure that the competition will be a huge success and that there will be no shortage of handball fans filling the stands. I wish everyone, athletes, coaches, referees, the fans, and the entire organisation an excellent championship"!

Gondomar

This city has over 150.000 inhabitants and it is also one of the most populated in the Porto Metropolitan Area. One of the ex-libris of the city is Monte Crasto, a natural fortress, 154 meters high. It is one of the main viewpoints of the city, where you have access to breathtaking views of the Douro River and surrounding cities. The art of working with filigree and carving is a highlight regarding the ancestral traditions and cultural heritage.

Venue: Multiusos of Gondomar

This venue is very versatile and can host various activities, with a capacity for more than 4.000 spectators seated or 8.000 standing for other shows. It has a central hall of more than 6.000 square meters designed to host both sporting and musical events. The Hall is in the city centre with quick access roads and is three minutes away from the city of Porto.

Marco Martins – Mayor of Gondomar Municipality

“Hosting the European Under-20 Handball Championship is a source of pride for us. As the European City of Sport in 2017, Gondomar is happy to host competitions of the most varied modalities. I wish on behalf of all the people from Gondomar that the national team has excellent participation and can leave the title in Portugal.”
