The Lazarov-Mirkulovski handball vision
One question that everyone wants to hear an answer to is how coach Lazarov and assistant coach Mirkulovski see players Lazarov and Mirkulovski.
“Our national team with and without Filip Mirkulovski is not the same team. When it’s hard, when you are playing crucial moments of the match, the whole team trusts Mirkulovski. I as a head coach have full trust in him. I know he will do his best on the court, that he still plays with passion. His anticipation both in defence and attack are very important for us and it’s very important we have him,” says Lazarov.
Returning the compliment, Mirkulovski says: “How to describe Lazarov, really? He plays at the top level for 20 years. I said many times already he is one of the few players, not only in handball, that are playing this good, at this level all these years. It’s incredible.
“We know it’s going to be tough to find a new Kiro, but we have to give our best to transfer all the knowledge,” adds Mirkulovski.
So will fans see both of them on the court in Debrecen, increasing their EHF EURO goal tally?
“It would be the best option if the two of us don’t even have to play,” Lazarov smiles. “However, as all teams, we too had some problems. Therefore, in important situations we are ready to step on and help.”
The duo have a broadly similar vision of the game.
“I think we agree on 90 per cent in everything related with handball. This 10 per cent is my opinion and if I see something, I always tell Kiro. He accepts that and we have a very good relationship on and off the court. I might even say that we have an better connection now as player-coaches than we had as a teammates,” believes Mirkulovski.
Lazarov has almost the same opinion.
“I have talked a lot with Mirkulovski on how they work in the club, how he does this role in Wetzlar too. We tried to take best things from both my and his handball world, combine them in one and we are giving our best to transfer everything to our country, to our national team,” he says.
EHF EURO 2022 expectations
North Macedonia opens the EHF EURO 2022 in Debrecen with a match against Slovenia, on 13 January at 18:00 CET. Two days later they will face Montenegro and on 17 January will close the group phase against Denmark.
“We have really strong opponents here in group A. We will have to push ourselves hard against Denmark, Slovenia and Montenegro. Progressing to the main round would be a great success for us,” Lazarov says.
“We have to go step by step, even finishing third behind opponents like that would be a good tournament. What’s important is that we do everything as we agreed on training. If we succeed in that, everything is possible,” he adds.
“Our wish is of course to go to the main round, but we know it’s not going to be easy. That’s our wish, and our goal is that third spot. No matter what, we will give our maximum,” concludes Mirkulovski.
